Think back over your business history to what has been your greatest challenge. Based on the interviews we do with the more than 100 New Members that come on board each month, we find that a “staff problem” is the fundamental issue they virtually all deal with.
The common symptoms are that the doctor can’t get things implemented because the staff doesn’t get on board. Their people resist change, or simply don’t comply. Staff have less-than-cooperative attitudes… say they don’t have time to do what they’re asked… or complain about being overworked and underpaid. Employees suddenly quit without giving notice. The doctor — who’s supposed to be in a leadership position — may even avoid certain staff members because they are so difficult to deal with!
Those are all signs of an office with a “staff problem.” In essence, the Practice is being “controlled” by the staff instead of the doctor. No expectations have been set, and there are no consequences for these non-compliant behaviors and bad attitudes. And it’s an absolute guarantee the Practice is under-delivering to its patients, and struggling to get new ones as a result of all this nonsense!
So what is the current status of your team? Honestly assess the quality of your people on a 10-point scale. If you’ve been in business for 20 years, as an example, you should have been BUILDING on your team for 20 years. So they should be the BEST team you’ve ever had, right? Maybe not a “10” but certainly more than a “5.”
If you don’t have the best team you’ve ever had, it means you need help in the HUMAN CAPITAL area. The fact is, YOU are undoubtedly the only constant throughout all your years in business. You are the one common denominator for all the staff that you have today –- and all that have come and gone over the years.
If you don’t have a team that’s at least a 7 or 8 by now, you need help learning to be a good leader, a good teacher, and a good coach. For any year to be a good one, it’s imperative that you learn to be in control, in charge, and a good coach to create a winning team. After all, we’ve all seen teams with great talent that are horribly coached, so they lose. Conversely, we’ve seen teams with less talented players who are trained and coached in an amazing way — and they win over the teams with better talent.
